Helena Fitzgerald ‐ B.Sc, B.Arch, MRIAI, CEPHD


Helena is an RIAI Registered Architect with experience of a wide range of projects, in the UK, Ireland and France. Prior to founding her own practice she spent 8 years with Building Design Partnership, Europe’s largest interdisciplinary construction consultancy. With specialist expertise in Building Conservation and Low Energy Design she was an early adopter of the Passive House approach to low energy building and became an EU Certified Passive House Designer in 2011. She has completed two passive houses to date, one in County Meath, the other her own house in County Carlow.

Projects


Current projects include new-build and refurbishment/conservation projects in the private residential, education, community and commercial sectors. Helena works closely with clients to understand their needs and to create elegant, light filled and energy efficient buildings to meet those needs. Her work has been published in Passive House Plus, Image Interiors, The Sunday Times and The Irish Independent.

Conservation


Helena Fitzgerald Architects is RIAI Conservation Accredited at Grade III and the practice has been involved in a number of projects on traditionally built buildings, Protected Structures and on projects located in Architectural Conservation Areas. Recent work includes ‘Granite Drystone Walls and Ditches of The Blackstairs in South Carlow’, a Heritage Council funded report completed with Mary Laheen Architects.

Sustainability


Sustainable design is a cornerstone of the practice which has significant expertise in low energy design in both commercial and residential sectors. The importance of sustainable design within existing structures is also recognised and Helena draws on years of experience in their conservation, repair and adaptation.
